I always thought if you take a swing at a ball and for any
reason you stopped just short of the ball it was not a stroke.

Dear Lou,
Please review the Definition of “Stroke.” You will learn
that “if a player checks his downswing voluntarily before the clubhead reaches
the ball he has not made a stroke.” The key word here is “voluntarily.” In Ask Linda #150l-Player pushes short putt into hole, the player’s attempt to tap the
ball into the hole was stopped by the ground. He did not change his mind; he intended
to hit the ball. When a player moves his club forward with the intention of hitting
the ball, he has officially made a stroke.
