Ask Linda #861-Ball crosses hazard and rolls back in

Linda, if your ball travels over water marked by yellow stakes, lands on the side of a raised green and rolls down past the yellow hazard line and into the water, which is now low and several feet from the yellow line, are you able to drop the ball on the dry area between the water and the hazard line?

Lou from Memphis, Tennessee

Dear Lou,

No. Relief for a ball in a water hazard must always be behind the hazard, outside the area designated by yellow stakes. If you take a look at Rule 26, you will notice that relief option “b” (the line-of-sight option) instructs you to drop a ball behind the water hazard.
