Ask Linda #824-Realign lifted ball

Linda,

I haven’t bothered you for some time but there is a question I haven’t been able to precisely find the answer to:

In correctly picking up a ball that is interfering with a competitor’s shot, I know that it must not be cleaned nor may its lie be improved, but, as it is replaced, may it be realigned?

Thanks… I very much appreciate all your efforts in educating the golfing community.

Lou from New Jersey

Dear Lou,

The ball may be realigned when it is replaced. However, if there is mud on the ball, you may not replace the ball in such a way as to tee the ball up on the mud [Decision 21/5].
