Ask Linda #627-Ball embedded in face of bunker

Hi Linda,

Can you please clarify this rule for us… Relief for embedded ball.

Rule 25-2 provides relief, without penalty, for a ball embedded in its own pitch-mark in any closely mown area through the green.

Closely mown area means any area on the course, including paths through the rough, cut to fairway height or less.

What is the status on bunker faces? On our course, we do not have the proper equipment to cut bunker faces to "fairway height." Does this mean we cannot give free relief  for ball embedded on our bunker faces?

Thanks in advance.
More power!

Lou from the Philippines

Dear Lou,

That is exactly what it means, Lou. If your bunker faces are not mown to fairway height or less, there is no free relief for an embedded ball. If conditions are so wet on your course that it is advisable to allow players to get free relief for an embedded ball anywhere through the green (which would include your bunker faces that are grass-covered), the Committee may adopt Local Rule #4 in Appendix I, Part B.
