Ask Linda #506-Topped drive

Hi Linda,
My friend topped hit her drive, so it just dribbled about 12 inches off the tee.  She then re-teed it and re-hit it as her second stroke.  Should she have left the ball on the ground to hit her second shot instead of re-teeing it?  Did re-teeing it penalize her?
Many thanks,
Lulu

Dear Lulu,

When your friend hit her drive, the ball was in play. She should have hit her second shot off the ground, where the ball lay.

However, a player always has the option to play a ball under stroke and distance. This means hitting a ball where she hit her previous shot and adding a one-stroke penalty to her score. Since the previous shot was hit from the teeing ground, the ball may be re-teed anywhere on the teeing ground.

When your friend re-teed and hit a second drive, she hit her third shot on the hole.
